THE MOST IMPORTANT BREAKTHROUGH IN ALMOST 60 YEARS...
When CARB™, after several years of intense development work,
was introduced in the mid 1990's it was a revolution in bearing
technology. The toroidal roller bearing was born.
Never before had a new bearing concept so many new features to offer.
The inventor's hopes of creating a bearing that could take angular
misalignment as well as axial displacement and higher load were
satisfied more than well.
It is a fact that all new bearing types developed during this century
have been developed by SKF. The toroidal roller bearing concept
only confirms SKF's role as the world's leading bearing manufacturer.

ALL BEARING TYPES
HAVE ADVANTAGES. THE TOROIDAL ROLLER BEARING HAS ALL THE ADVANTAGES.
A cylindrical roller bearing tolerates axial displacement, but
not angular misalignment. A spherical roller bearing tolerates angular
misalignment, but not internal axial displacement. A needle roller
bearing is compact and tolerates axial displacement, but not misalignment.
The toroidal roller bearing combines the advantages of these three
bearing types without any of their disadvantages.
Whether you are working with machine maintenance or mechanical design,
CARB will give you a whole new perspective on cost efficiency.
INCREASE AVAILABILITY, REDUCE MAINTENANCE ...
Premature failure in conventional roller bearings is often due to
manufacturing deviations and deformation in operation that cause
uneven load on rollers.
A CARB, where the load is always evenly distributed over the roller
length, will run for its full life where others fail prematurely.
Thus, it will help you increase machine availability as well as
reduce maintenance.

 |
No angular misalignment (= ideal working condition
for cylindrical, taper and needle roller bearings). No axial
displacement (= ideal working condition for spherical
roller bearings). |
 |
Angular misalignment of up to 0.5° has little influence
on the life of a toroidal roller bearing. It can take misalignment
of up to 1° with some life reduction. |
 |
For a typical operating clearance, the axial displacement
can be up to 20% of the bearing width. |

... AND BOOST PERFORMANCE.
As CARB handles axial displacement internally, it helps to reduce
vibration in a machine and thus allows higher machine speed.
For heavy-duty machines, CARB mean more savings, less maintenance
and higher productivity. For consumer products, CARB means lower
service and repair costs and increased customer satisfaction.
CARB is definitely a user-friendly bearing.
REDUCE SIZE, WEIGHT AND MANUFACTURING COSTS.
The toroidal roller bearing offers many challenges for the experienced
mechanical designer.
It permits smaller and lighter designs where bearing size previously
prohibited downsizing. In some cases CARB not only enables downsizing
of the bearing arrangement, but also downsizing of the entire machine
design.
Since manufacturing costs for most machines are related to size
and weight, CARB can help you to design more competitive products
as well as to reduce manufacturing costs by downsizing.
We will help you accept the challenge.
APPLICATIONS.
The toroidal roller bearing concept offers several benefits for
a
wide range of application areas. The general, most important benefits
are high carrying capacity, more compact and less complex designs,
reduced weight and manufacturing costs, increased reliability, longer
bearing service life and lower vibration levels. CARB bearings are
already used in applications such as planetary gearboxes, industrial
gearboxes,
continuous casting machines, fans and blowers, drying cylinders
and felt rolls in paper making machines. All with great success.
The most recent - and equally successful - applications for CARB
are electric motors, sugar cane
shredders, mobile cranes/wheels on rails, compressors, vehicle
gearboxes, intermediate gears on dumper trucks, rolling tables in
steel works and wind energy plants.
Do you see a possible use of CARB in your field of action, but you
don't find it mentioned above? Don't worry, the world of CARB users
are growing rapidly
