Pin and Bush Couplings

Pin and bush couplings provide a simple, robust and cost‑effective way of connecting two shafts while accommodating misalignment and damping shock loads. With flexible bushes between driving pins and driven flanges, these couplings are well‑suited to general industrial applications where reliability and ease of maintenance are important.

At ACORN®, we supply a wide range of pin and bush couplings and replacement bushes from leading manufacturers, with multiple sizes and configurations available from stock.

Need help specifying a pin and bush coupling?

If you’re unsure which pin and bush coupling or replacement bushes you need, our specialists are here to help.

Contact us with your shaft sizes, power, speed and application details, and we’ll recommend a suitable solution.

What are the features and benefits of pin and bush couplings?

Fail safe design

Pin and bush couplings feature a fail safe design. This means that they will continue to function even if the elastomer element is damaged. This makes the coupling ideal for use in safety equipment such as elevator drives and fire pumps.

Dampening

Thanks to the elastomeric element, this coupling has excellent vibration and shock load dampening properties. This helps to protect surrounding equipment from damage.

Accommodating of misalignment

Pin and bush couplings can accommodate misalignment of up to 0.5 degrees, thanks to the barrel shaped bushes.

Pin and Bush Couplings FAQs

What misalignment can a pin and bush coupling handle?

Pin and bush couplings can accommodate angular, parallel and axial misalignment thanks to the flexibility of the bushes. However, good alignment at installation is still important to maximise bush life and reduce loads on connected equipment.

How often should bushes be replaced?

Bush life depends on load, speed, misalignment and environment. Bushes should be inspected at regular maintenance intervals for signs of cracking, hardening, deformation or wear and replaced as required. Many users keep spare bushes on site to minimise downtime.

What information do I need to size a pin and bush coupling?

You’ll need motor power, speed (rpm), shaft sizes and keyways, application type (e.g. pump, conveyor, mixer), service factor and any special conditions such as high ambient temperature or dirty environments. Our team can help you work through this and recommend a suitable size.
