What is an electric motor?
An electric motor converts electrical energy into rotational mechanical energy via electromagnetic fields. In industrial applications, motors are typically used to drive gearboxes, pumps, fans, compressors and other driven equipment either directly or via couplings, belts or chains.
Common industrial motor types include:
- Three‑phase AC induction motors – the most widely used general‑purpose industrial motors

Electric Motors FAQs
What information do I need to replace an existing motor?
Ideally, provide the nameplate details: power (kW), voltage, current, speed (rpm), frequency (Hz), frame size, efficiency class (if shown), IP rating, mounting (B3, B5, B14) and any special features (brake, encoder, PTC). Photos of the nameplate and motor can also help us identify a suitable replacement.
What is the difference between IE2, IE3 and IE4 motors?
IE classes define motor efficiency:
- IE2 – high efficiency
- IE3 – premium efficiency
- IE4 – super premium efficiency
Higher IE class motors use less energy over their lifetime. Many applications now require IE3 or above in line with regulations and energy‑saving initiatives.
How do I match a motor to a gearbox?
We match the motor frame size, shaft, flange and speed to the gearbox input, ensuring the combined package delivers the required torque and speed. Share your required output speed/torque and application, and we can propose a complete geared motor or motor + gearbox solution.
Can you replace obsolete or non‑standard motors?
Often, yes. Even if the original motor is obsolete or non‑standard, we can usually offer an equivalent or upgrade using adapter flanges, different frame sizes or gearbox modifications where necessary.
