What are the features and benefits of gear couplings?
A complete gear coupling consists of 2 hubs, 2 covers and 1 assembly kit. The assembly kit includes oil seals, gasket, bolts and lock nuts.
Features & Benefits of the Gear Coupling
- Universal coupling, suitable for most applications
- Can transmit high torque
- Used at low speeds
- Can accommodate parallel, angular and axial misalignment, as well as large axial moments
Gear Couplings FAQs
What is a gear coupling?
A gear coupling is a torsionally rigid shaft coupling that uses toothed hubs and mating sleeves to transmit torque. It typically consists of:
- Two hubs with external gear teeth
- One or two sleeves with internal gear teeth
- Seals and lubrication
The meshing of the gear teeth provides a high-torque, positive drive, while the crowned tooth profile allows the coupling to accommodate angular misalignment. Depending on the design, gear couplings can be supplied as single engagement (for short distances between shafts) or double engagement (with a spacer for longer shaft separations).
What information do I need to select the correct gear coupling?
To size and select a gear coupling, we typically need: shaft diameters, required torque or kW and speed (rpm), type of driver and driven machine, required service factor, operating environment, and details of any misalignment or shaft separation distance (DBSE). Our specialists can use this information to recommend a suitable size and configuration.
