What is a locking assembly?
A locking assembly is an internal shaft–hub connection device installed between a shaft and the bore of a hub, gear, pulley, sprocket or flywheel. It typically consists of inner and outer tapered rings and clamping screws. When the screws are tightened, the tapers move relative to each other, generating radial pressure that locks the shaft and hub together through friction.
Locking assemblies typically offer:
- High torque and axial load transmission
- Backlash‑free connection
- No keyways or splines required
- Simple, repeatable installation and removal
- Good concentricity for reduced run‑out
What types of hubs can be secured using a locking assembly?
Locking assemblies are suitable for securing almost any type of hub onto a shaft including:
- Sprockets
- Levers
- Pulleys
- Brake discs
- Cam discs
- Couplings
- Balance wheels
Locking Assemblies FAQs
How do I select the correct locking assembly size?
Selection is based on shaft diameter, hub bore, required torque and any axial loads, plus the safety factor appropriate to your application. Shaft and hub materials, tolerances and available space also influence the choice. Provide these details and we’ll recommend a suitable size and type.
Will a locking assembly damage the shaft or hub?
When correctly selected and installed to the specified tightening torques, locking assemblies provide a secure connection without permanent damage. The connection is purely frictional and can usually be released, allowing the components to be reused, subject to manufacturer guidelines.
What is the difference between locking assemblies and shrink discs?
Locking assemblies are installed inside the hub bore and clamp from the inside out. Shrink discs fit on the outside of a hollow shaft and clamp from the outside in. Both are keyless locking devices; the right choice depends on whether you have a solid or hollow shaft and your machine design.
