Disc Couplings

Disc couplings provide a compact, torsionally stiff and maintenance‑free solution for connecting two shafts, while accommodating misalignment and transmitting high torque. Ideal for demanding industrial environments, disc couplings are widely used in applications where reliability, precision and low backlash are critical.

At ACORN®, we offer a wide range of disc couplings from leading manufacturers, available in various sizes, materials and configurations to suit your application.

What is a disc coupling?

A disc coupling is a flexible shaft coupling that uses one or more thin metallic discs as the flexible element. These discs are arranged in a pack and bolted between two hubs (and sometimes a centre spacer). As the shafts move, the discs flex to absorb misalignment while still transmitting torque.

Disc couplings typically offer:

  • High torque capacity in a compact design
  • Torsional stiffness for accurate torque transmission
  • Zero or very low backlash
  • No lubrication requirement
  • Long, maintenance‑free service life

Typical applications

Disc couplings are used across a wide range of industries, including:

  • Pumps and compressors
  • Fans and blowers
  • Servo drives and positioning systems
  • Generators and turbines
  • Printing and packaging machinery
  • Steel, mining and heavy industrial drives
  • Chemical and process industry equipment

Whether you need a compact servo coupling or a heavy‑duty solution for a high‑torque drive, we can help you select the right disc coupling for the job.

Disc Coupling FAQs

How do I size a disc coupling for my application?

You’ll need to know the shaft diameters, required torque, operating speed, type and amount of misalignment, and any environmental factors. Our specialists can work through this with you and recommend a suitable coupling.

Can a disc coupling replace another coupling type?

Disc couplings can often replace gear, grid or elastomeric couplings to reduce maintenance and backlash. Provide details of your existing coupling (brand, type, size) and we’ll advise on a possible disc coupling alternative.
