What is a zero-backlash jaw coupling?

Zero-backlash jaw couplings are a robust and popular solution for transmitting torque between two shafts. They are commonly found in high-performance systems that operate with frequent starts and stops while requiring precise motion control. As one of the most trusted power-transmission components, a jaw coupling’s spider material is critical to solving your application challenges.

Backlash-free jaw couplings FAQs

How to select the correct spider for your backlash-free jaw coupling

Backlash-free, or zero-backlash jaw couplings, comprise two hubs and an insert called the spider. Selecting the right spider is critical to the coupling performance in your application. Ruland offers three choices of spiders with differing performance characteristics based on their shore hardness. They are conveniently colour-coded for easy identification without needing additional testing.

  • 98 Shore A (red) – highest torque and torsional stiffness
  • 92 Shore A (yellow) – balance of torque, torsional stiffness, and dampening
  • 85 Shore A (blue) – high dampening with limited torque and stiffness capabilities

Why choose a Ruland backlash-free jaw coupling?

Ruland backlash-free jaw couplings feature a three-part design. This comprises two metal hubs along with an elastomeric spider insert. Should this spider fail, the metal hubs lock together to allow operation to continue until the spider is replaced. This helps to keep downtime to a minimum.

Thanks to its polyurethane spider element, this coupling offers outstanding levels of protection against vibration whilst reducing the impact of shock loads. This helps to protect sensitive surrounding equipment, such as the motor, from damage, extending its lifespan.

Ruland backlash-free jaw couplings require minimal maintenance, as lubrication is not required. They are also quick and easy to fit, inspect and replace when required. This ensures that downtime is kept to a minimum, maximising your productivity.

This coupling is suitable for many applications thanks to the vast selection of options available. Clamp and set screw hubs can be combined with inch, metric, keyed and keyless bores for maximum versatility. The backlash-free design of this coupling makes it suitable for servo and encoder applications which require the highest levels of precision.

  • The balanced design helps reduce vibration at speeds up to 8000 RPM.
  • Hubs are manufactured from 2024 t351 aluminium bar stock for a precise fit, superior strength, and a bright finish.
  • Standard part numbers for clamp and set screw hubs with inch, metric, keyed, or keyless bores.
