Backlash-free Jaw Couplings

A backlash-free jaw coupling is a flexible shaft coupling that uses two interlocking hubs and an elastomer insert (spider) designed to eliminate or minimise play between driving and driven shafts.

By pre-loading the elastomer element, these couplings deliver near-zero backlash, making them ideal for applications where positioning accuracy, smooth running and repeatable motion are critical.

What are the features and benefits of backlash-free jaw couplings?

Dampening abilities

Backlash-free jaw couplings help to dampen vibration as well as reducing the impact of shock loads, protecting surrounding equipment from damage.

Failsafe operation

These couplings are failsafe. This means that they will continue to operate should failure occur.

Maintenance free

Backlash-free jaw couplings do not require lubrication or maintenance during operation, helping to reduce downtime and labour requirements. They are also easily to inspect visually, thanks to their split design.

Able to transmit high torques

Despite their small dimensions, these couplings are able to transmit extremely high torques of up to 35,000 Nm.

Backlash-free Jaw Couplings FAQs

What is a backlash-free jaw coupling?

A backlash-free jaw coupling is a flexible shaft coupling with two interlocking hubs and a preloaded elastomer insert (“spider”) designed to transmit torque with zero or very low backlash. It combines the robustness of a jaw coupling with the accuracy needed for positioning and servo applications.

How do backlash-free jaw couplings eliminate backlash?

Backlash is removed by:

  • Preloading the elastomer spider between the hubs
  • Using precision-machined jaws that tightly engage the spider

This eliminates play between driving and driven shafts, so torque is transmitted without “clunking” or lost motion.

Where are backlash-free jaw couplings typically used?

Common applications include:

  • Servo and stepper motor drives
  • Positioning and indexing systems
  • Robotics and automation
  • Packaging, labelling and filling machinery
  • Printing, converting and inspection equipment
  • Light-to-medium power transmission with precision requirements

They are widely used anywhere accurate, repeatable motion is required.
