Beam Couplings

Beam couplings provide precise, backlash-free torque transmission in a compact, single-piece design. With excellent torsional flexibility and the ability to accommodate misalignment, they are widely used in motion control, positioning and light-duty power transmission applications.

ACORN® offers a wide range of beam couplings from leading manufacturers, with various sizes, bore configurations and materials available for fast delivery across the UK.

What is a beam coupling?

A beam coupling (also known as a helical coupling) is a flexible shaft coupling manufactured from a single piece of material, typically aluminium or stainless steel. A spiral or helical slot is machined into the body of the coupling, forming a “beam” structure that provides flexibility.

A typical beam coupling offers:

Single-piece construction

Helically cut beam section

Bores to suit plain, keyed or clamping shaft connections

The helical beam allows the coupling to transmit torque while accommodating angular, parallel and axial misalignment, as well as compensating for shaft end-play in many precision applications.

Typical applications

Beam couplings are commonly used in:

  • Servo and stepper motor drives
  • Encoders and feedback devices
  • Lead screw and ball screw drives
  • Small pumps and instrumentation
  • Robotics, automation and pick-and-place systems
  • General motion control and light-duty power transmission

Where accurate positioning, low inertia and compact size are important, beam couplings are often the preferred choice.

Beam Couplings FAQs

Are beam couplings backlash-free?

Yes, beam couplings are designed as single-piece couplings and are generally considered backlash-free, making them suitable for many precision positioning and motion control applications.

Are beam couplings suitable for high-torque applications?

Beam couplings are typically used in low to moderate torque applications, especially in motion control. For higher torque or heavy-duty power transmission, other coupling types such as disc, gear or elastomeric couplings are usually more suitable.
