What is a gear coupling?
A gear coupling is a torsionally rigid shaft coupling that uses toothed hubs and mating sleeves to transmit torque. It typically consists of:
- Two hubs with external gear teeth
- One or two sleeves with internal gear teeth
- Seals and lubrication
The meshing of the gear teeth provides a high-torque, positive drive, while the crowned tooth profile allows the coupling to accommodate angular misalignment. Depending on the design, gear couplings can be supplied as single engagement (for short distances between shafts) or double engagement (with a spacer for longer shaft separations).
