Open Type Linear Ball Bearings

Open type linear ball bearings provide smooth, low‑friction linear motion along hardened, fully supported shafts. Designed with a longitudinal opening, they are used together with shaft support rails or blocks, offering high load capacity and rigidity for demanding linear applications.

At ACORN®, we supply a wide range of open type linear ball bearings, matching housings and supported shafts from leading manufacturers, in both metric and imperial sizes.

What is an open type linear ball bearing?

An open type linear ball bearing (linear bushing) is a cylindrical bearing with rows of recirculating balls that run on a round shaft. Unlike closed type bearings, it has a longitudinal cut‑out in the outer and inner rings. This opening allows the bearing to sit over a shaft that is fully supported along its length by a support rail or block.

Open type linear ball bearings typically offer:

  • Very low friction for smooth linear motion
  • High load capacity and rigidity with supported shafts
  • Improved resistance to shaft deflection
  • Standardised metric and imperial sizes
  • Options with seals and corrosion‑resistant materials

They are usually mounted in pillow blocks or flanged housings designed specifically for open bearings on supported shafts.

Choosing the right open type linear ball bearing

When specifying an open type linear ball bearing, consider:

  • Shaft diameter (metric or imperial) and tolerance
  • Load (magnitude, direction and distribution across bearings)
  • Stroke length and maximum travel speed
  • Required accuracy and rigidity
  • Shaft support type (support rails / blocks, span, mounting)
  • Operating environment (dust, coolant, washdown, temperature)
  • Need for seals or shields
  • Bearing/housing style (pillow block, flanged unit, multi‑bearing blocks)

Our technical team can assist with bearing selection, load checks and cross‑referencing from existing part numbers or OEM designs.

Open Type Linear Ball Bearings FAQs

How do I size an open type linear ball bearing?

You’ll need shaft diameter, load (including number of bearings sharing the load), stroke length, speed, and required life or duty cycle. We’ll also look at how the shaft is supported and the spacing between bearings. With this information we can recommend suitable bearing sizes and support arrangements.

Can I cross‑reference my existing open type linear bearing?

In many cases, yes. If you provide the existing part number, shaft size or key dimensions, we can cross‑reference to equivalent products from our range.
