How to grease a spindle bearing
How to grease a spindle bearing
The correct lubrication of a spindle bearing is essential for ensuring smooth operation and life-span longevity. Below, we discuss how to grease a spindle bearing, alongside information on using the SKF Super Precision Manager Tool to support.
How to effectively and safely grease a spindle bearing
Typically, greasing a spindle bearing is done using a grease gun that pumps the chosen grease through the bearing’s grease nipple.
For high-speed applications, it's crucial to keep grease levels below 30% of the bearing’s fill space, as overfilling can lead to leakage due to the high speeds involved. Additionally, these applications require a run-in period to allow the grease to distribute evenly throughout the bearing.
To determine the precise grease quantity and relubrication intervals for your specific application, we recommend using the SKF Super Precision Manager Tool. This intuitive tool calculates the optimal fill rate and helps you keep your bearings in peak condition.
How do I use SKF Super Precision Manager Tool?
The SKF Super Precision Manager Tool is a mobile application designed to manage and mount Super Precision Bearings. The tool is designed to streamline the process of bearing management and fitting across every stage.
The tool is used by inputting the relevant bearing information or simply scanning the bearing barcode, in order to access relevant bearing data. The app can then be used to do various calculations during the bearing installation process, including torque tightening, oil and grease and bearing matching for optimal performance, whilst also providing inventory reports for dealers who stock the relevant bearing.
How to select the best lubricant for spindle bearings
When selecting grease for super precision bearings, the best choice depends on the required operating temperature range. There are two primary options: Grease with a mineral base oil and lithium thickener, which is ideal for temperatures between -30°C and +110°C. Grease with a synthetic base oil, which is suitable for applications requiring enhanced performance in varying conditions.
Other key factors to consider when selecting grease include:
-
Operating temperatures
-
Bearing speed
-
Static operation or infrequent rotation
-
Vibration levels
-
Load conditions
-
Water resistance requirements
By evaluating these factors, you can determine the correct consistency grade and base oil viscosity for your application. If you're unsure which grease is best for your needs or have specific concerns such as water resistance, rust protection, or high vibration, our Lubrication Expert is happy to help you find the ideal solution.
