SKF Ceramic bearings

SKF ceramic hybrid bearings have rings made of bearing steel, whilst the rolling elements are made of silicon nitride (Si3N4).

Silicon nitride offers numerous advantages over traditional bearing steel. The benefits of ceramic hybrid bearings include:

  • Protection from electrical erosion, thanks to their excellent electrical insulation properties
  • Higher speed capabilities, as a silicon nitride rolling element has a 60% lower density than an identically sized steel element
  • Low frictional heat, extending grease life and leading to a longer service life
  • High wear-resistance of silicon nitride makes SKF ceramic hybrid bearings ideal for harsh and contaminated environments
  • Silicon nitride has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion, so offers more stability over temperature gradients
